A course in Christchurch for adults who never learned to read or write properly at school. Their reading ages range from nine to normal, but those with normal reading ages are still unable to write properly. Most felt wasted in their jobs, but also trapped because of their reading difficulty. Only one attempted School Certificate. He failed. The others didn’t have the heart to try. Their reading was so slow that study was arduous, and a three-hour paper would have taken as long as that to read.
