Gold medal manager to speak

Tony Palmer, the manager of the hockey team that was the toast of New Zealand after its gold medal win at the Montreal Olympics, will be the guest speaker at the Canterbury “Hockey Syortsman of the Year” dinner on Wednesday. Palmer, who also managed the New Zealand team at the World Cup, in Kuala Lumpur, in March last year, is the chairman of the Auckland Hockey Association’s management committee. The hockey award differs from the rubgy award announced last week. It is made to a player and is chosen on performances for Canterbury A at Lancaster Park. The hockey award, however, is not restricted to players. It can be made to a coach or administrators as has happened twice in the six years the award has been made. It is made on an person’s contribution to the sport at any level, his ability and sportsmanship. Last year’s winner was, Tony Ineson, captain of the successful Olympic team.
