Death ' not suspicious’
The police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the, death of a man in the cells of the Christchurch Central Police Station last week. John William Provis, aged 34, of Christchurch, had been arrested at about 8 p.m. on a charge of false pretences. He was checked regularly through the evening and when checked at 9.28 p.m. he was asleep, and appeared to be breathing normally. When he was checked again at 10 p.m. he had stopped breathing. Policemen tried to revive him but failed. An ambulance was called and more attempts to revive Mr Provis were not successful either. A post-morten examination was held yesterday to determine the cause of death. An inquest will be held later.
