Warning on Pacific
NZPA-Reuter Peking China has issued a warning against Soviet attempts to “stretch its aggressive talons” into the South Pacific and defended steps by nations there, including Australia, “to protect themselves from encroachments by alien forces,” United Press International reported.
“The Soviet revisionists are greatly annoyed by the just actions of the South Pacific countries to guard against and resist Soviet expansion,” said a commentary’ in the “Peoples’ Daily,” official organ of the Chinese Communist Party. It said the Soviets “have made counter charges by saying that the South Pacific countries such as Australia are intensifying military preparation and maintaining a tense situation. This is another ugly performance of the Soviet hegemonists.”
