10,000 visit ‘open house’
An estimated 10,000 people went to Christchurch Airport on Saturday afternoon to the United States Navy’s “open house.”
They saw there a variety of exhibits—including aircraft, photographic displays, equipment, clothing, and film shows—depicting something of life and work in the Antarctic today.
During the afternoon, a few persons protesting against foreign bases in New Zealand moved through the warehouses housing many of the exhibits, putting stickers on photographic displays. Two constables quietly moved in, and a supply of the stickers was confiscated.
