Papanui not disgraced in soccer
Papanul-Suburtw' worst fears were avoided on Saturday — It was not crucified by this season’s glamour soccer team, Hamilton, in their post-season friendly match.
However, even without Its name players — Keith Nelson, the New Zealand Player of the Year, and Dennis Tindall, the New Zealand winger — Hamilton did not exert itself in winning 3-1.
As an opportunity to assess how the northern league champions will fare in next season's Rothmans League, the match was valueless. It was something of a triumph for the spirited Broadlands Southei-n League seconddivision team, which had its share of the play and had plenty of chances, of which it could take only one. Hamilton’s first goal came after 25min., inspired bv a superb through ball by John McDermld to Peter Santner on the wing. Santner beat two men and hit a fine shot from the edge of the area.
It then scored twice in a minute half way through the second half, with headed goals by Barry McKenzie and Keith Niederer.
Mike Hogan scored for the home side late in the match, a reward for his fine efforts. Tom Daly in midfield also impressed.
