Native forests protection
Sir, — Although there were points of disagreement, Mr Levy, Conservator of Forests in Canterbury, and Mr Guy Salmon, spokesman for the Native Forests Action Council, were certainly not at loggerheads at the recent forum held by the Environmental Vanguard Organisation. The speakers were in reasonable agreement on some important issues, especially the pricing policy for native timbers. Mr Levy strongly criticised the existing price controls, which mean that native woods are underpriced and undervalued. Both speakers agreed that native woods should be used for specialised, highquality products, rather than for construction purposes, although Mr Levy said that high-quality timber formed only a part of the wood obtainable from native trees. However, radiata pine could fulfil most purposes, and the public should be made to realise this, rather than continue to demand native woods for a wide range of purposes for which other timbers were available and suitable. — Yours, etc., HELEN HERVEY.
