Record turn-out at season’s first show

Agricultural and pastoral associatons througout Canterbury are in for a good year if the trend set by the Ellesmere A. and P. show on Saturday continues.

Not only were entries a record, but the fine day encouraged many “city cousins” to travel from Christchurch to the Leeston Show Grounds, so that gate-takings for the day were almost double last year’s record. At one stage, traffic on the Christchurch road was reported to be backed up more than a mile and a half along the road from the gates, and $llOO was taken at one gate between 11 a.m. and noon. The final figure for the day was $4164, compared with $2lBO last year.

The first of the season’s shows, the Ellesmere Show has traditionally enjoyed good support, but even the association’s officers were surprised by Saturday’s turn-out.

A feature of the grand parade — in two sections and led by the Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band and the Ellesmere Brass Band — was the entry of Clydesdale horses.

The nine Clydesdales on show captured the hearts of the less agricultural members of the crowd much as the premier mutton hogget and champion dairy cow drew the admiring glances of the farming community. The supreme champion mutton hogget was a new award this year and attracted strong competition. The award was finally, made to an 18-month Southdown ram shown by P. J. and M. C. Abbott. According to the Southdown judge, Mr A. K. McLaughlin (Culverden), the ram was a good example of what breeders should aim for

— very clean with very little waste and plenty of length. “Breeders in the district are obviously following the trend to produce the type of sheep that will help the commercial breeder to produce lambs for supply to the pre-sent-day market,” Mr McLaughlin said. The champion dairy cow was a five-year old Friesian, shown by E. J. Stalker and Son. The cow, Lucemvale Reflect Clauda, is from Canadian stock and a year-old heifer bred from her by the Stalkers won the junior championship for the breed. The supreme champion pig in all breeds was a Welsh boar shown by G. Timperely and Sons, who also showed the Landrace boar that was champion of its breed and junior all-breeds champion. A very large implement and machinery section was won by W. H. Cochrane and Company, Ltd. A display by a traction engine and threshing mill attracted spectators throughout the afternoon. A contest to guess the weight of a Charolais steer, run by the Ellesmere Jaycees and begun last week, was concluded at the show with the weighing of the beast. A surprising number of the 600 entries — 22 of them — were correct with the weight of 500 kilograms. Championship results were:— Sheep Border Leicester.—Ram: Lincoln College, champion and reserve.
