Ships’ graffiti frowned on
It is a common practice in ports throughout the world for ships’ crews to leave the name of their ship prominently displayed in paint in the port before departure. * Lyttelton is no exception, and the cliffs overlooking Cashin Quay make interesting reading, as do some of the wharves, if one is lucky enough to be afloat on the harbour and in a position to read the graffiti.
This tradition is not condoned by the Lyttelton Harbour Board, which recently had the names removed from the oil jetty, much to the dismay of visiting tankers’ crews.
In addition, the board has sent a warning to all shipping agents reminding them of the by-law which says that no person is allowed to “cut, scratch, or paint, or otherwise deface” any wharf or property of the board. The maximum fine for such an offence, on conviction, is $lOO.
The board asks ships concerned to remove graffiti on the wharves, but should a ship have sailed, her agent might be asked to do the work.
