Local-body policy talks

The Labour Party will hold a policy conference in Christchurch on Saturday, in preparation for next year’s local-body elections. It will begin at 10 a.m. in the conference room of the Trades Hall in Gloucester Street. The opening speaker will be an Auckland social worker, Mr I. Shirley. Speakers will address the conference on the Avon Loop Protection Association scheme, on housing needs of the aged, and on local government as it relates to Christchurch’s Maori community. In the afternoon, the conference will divide into four workshops to discuss finance and transport; town planning; health, social welfare, recreation, and sport; and the physical environment. Later, the conference will consider reports on transport, town planning, participation, and rating. Mr A. Clarke, Labour candidate for the Christchurch mayoralty, will end the conference with an address.
