19 States accept nuclear ship

The Otto Hahn, West Germany’s only nuclear-powered ship and one of the few nuclear merchant ships in the world, has completed 500,000 nautical miles without mishap. Since the 10,000-ton ship was launched in 1968 it has sailed the equivalent of 22 times round the world; it has carried 700,000 tonnes of cargo; and it has used only 45 kilograms of uranium as fuel.

Its cargoes have included ores, coal, phosphate and fertiliser. On its latest voyage it carried ore from Rio de Janeiro to Hamburg, but

earnings from freight cover only part of the running costs of what is still an experimental vessel subsidised by the West German Government.

The Government has been attempting to gain access for the ship to ports in as many countries as possible. So far, the nuclear ship has permission to berth in 19 countries.

Losses on the ship are being met by the Ministry of Research in Bonn, but the Government has postponed a plan to build a larger nu-clear-powered ship to carry containers.
