Firemen let down—-suddenly
This fire engine was answering a call to an oven fire at a house in Hamilton Avenue yesterday, but made an unscheduled stop only a few hundred yards short of its destination.
As the engine, which had been sent from the Harewood station, turned into Ham Road from Memorial Avenue a stub axle broke. The fire engine came to a sudden stop — and a front wheel rolled down the road.
Another appliance was sent from St Albans to attend the fire, but by the time it arrived the fire had been put out. The damaged appliance was later towed back to the workshop at the Central station.
