Three fined after fight with police
Three men who struggled with policemen outside Noahs Hotel on September 30 were convicted and fined a total of $275 by Mr N. L. Bradford, S.M. in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Edward Kuru Apirana, aged 23, a relief worker, pleaded guilty to charges of resisting a constable, and behaving in a threatening manner in the bar of Noah’s Hotel. He was convicted and fined $125. Sonny Michael Thompson, aged 19, a relief worker, and Raymond Mark Giddens, aged 20, a labourer, were each convicted and fined $75 on charges of obstructing a constable.
Sergeant D. Gibson told the Court that Apirana had been arrested after he waved a beer mug at policemen in the Gaslight Bar at Noahs Hotel, and told them to “have a go.” Giddens and Thompson were arrested after they tried to pull Apirana away from the constables, who suffered cuts and bruises in the scuffle.
