Community fair
The Mount Pleasant Community needs $l5OO to cover its running expenses for the next year and the centre committee hope to raise that amount at a fair at the centre this Saturday. The centre is used every day of the week by various sports and cultural groups. More than 500 people would use the centre during the week, said Mr G. W. Dodd, president of the Mount Pleasant Community Centre and Ratepayers’ Association.
The centre depends almost entirely on community support for funds said Mr Dodd. A $2 for $1 subsidy for maintenance is granted each year by the Christchurch City Council. All other finance is raised by the association. The community centre was opened in 1956 and now has 461 members. It provides recreational facilities for the 900 families in the area, said Mr Dodd.
The original community centre was a hall, plunket room and library. Extensions costing $27,000 were made in 1971, $lB,OOO of which was raised by the community itself.
It is hoped that community facilities will be further improved during the next few years with the addition of two squash courts. An application has been made to the City Council for permission to build the courts which are expected to cost about $60,000.
