Site thefts cost up to $l0,000
Christchurch builders are ‘losing up to $lO,OOO a year 'through raids on building 'sites in the city. Some construction firms are even budgeting for losses of up to $lOO for vandalism or theft on each ‘house they buik’ They say that thieves equip themselves with tools from building sites, then make more organised raids to gather materials and fittings for their own homes. Builders agree that the problem is getting worse, and some are reluctant to repair damage to new homes until the owners move in. One of Christchurch’s, biggest developers, Mr R. G. Mauger, builds about 100 houses a year. He said yesterday that vandals were costing him an average of $lOO a house — or $lO,OOO a year. With other builders, Mr Mauger called for residents to take more notice of activ- : ity around new houses, and to notify the police of anything suspicious.
