Suleiman tipped to win Caulfield Cup
From Keith McClure Melbourne Suleiman will go into tomorrow’s Caulfield Cup right at his best, and is confidently expected to spearhead a strong Kiwi challenge in a race in which he finished third last year.
He has everything going for him with No. 5 at the start, and that is expected to give him the edge over How Now, which drew No. 18. However How Now has done so well for the powerful Colin Hayes stable lately that she should reach one of the places. [ Bob Skelton rode Suleiman in a gallop with his stablemate Happy Union at ; Epsom yesterday morning, and said he was well pleased
with his Caulfield Cup mount’s fitness. “He feels really relaxed and as good as he has been at any time before," Skelton said after the gallop. At about the same time Van der Hum, which ran away with the honours when ridden by Bob Skelton in the Herbert Power Handicap last Saturday, galloped with Kythera over 2000 m eight metres out on the course proper at Mornington. The footing was slow' when Van der Hum, ridden j by Brent Thomson, Kythera (Graham McLiesh), finishing the trial in 2:l9]J the last 1600 in 1:49], the last 1200 in 1.20], and the final 400 in 28. Melbourne had rain yesterday afternoon, making it pretty certain that the Caulfield Cup going will be at least easy and perhaps Isoft.
A horse with the prowess of Van der Hum in those conditions will carry the respect of everyone, and the backing of thousands of Australians and New Zealanders. But Suleiman should be no less adept in such a situation. Selections: SULEIMAN HOW NOW VAN DER HUM
