Mayo Mellay looks well
Special Correspondent Wellington,
Quiet mornings are the order of the day at Trentiiain, even before a major meeting, and yesterday was no exception, but Mayo Mellnv looked good when hr ran his final trial for the Wellington Guineas. The few gallops that took place were run on No I grass. The course proper is easy but the forecast h mixed and yesterday it was impossible to say whether the going tomorrow would he firm. Clifford Brierley will ride Mayo Melia* for the first time in a race tomorrow hi the absence of Xoel Harris, but the two are old track companions and they went well together yesterday. Mayo Mrllav started at the 1600 m and went from there, working keenly early, in Imln 52IIsee The oiilv sectional time possible because of thick fog. mr« Imln 36 2*ee for the last 1400 m
The Mellay colt pulled up well and ready lor his next clash with Zermatt and Vice Regal. After that he will wait the week at Trentham to have his first race beyond 1600 m in the weight-for-age Harcourt Stakes on Labour Day. Mayo Melia)'s stablemate Toupet Royalc. which lines up for his third start in the Wellesley Stakes, sprinted the last 600 m of 1000 m down the chute but was not timed. An unusiially-tall bnv colt from the first crop of Fairdale Stud's Regent’s Tale Toupet Royalc has been second and third in his two races and the big run down tomorrow’s 1000 m 'should suit him.
Guest Star looked a mass of condition when lie worked keenly over two rounds of pace work on the two \ear-old grass. He is normallv big-barrelled and. though nr has had a middle distance race, looks as if he might benefit from tomorrow’s start In the Watkins Handicap His stablemate Stray Ir did light exercise in the middle.
