Major test
The Canterbury Colts rugby team will face its major test of the season when it takes on Wellington Colts at Athletic Park this afternoon.
Wellington is a strong team — it has beaten Taranaki, Manawatu and Walrarapa-Bush convincingly this season. Canterbury, for its part, has beaten South Canterbury, West Coast and the Canterbury under-20 side, but lost to Canterbury B and Otago B. The side will travel north in the knowledge that only one of its predecessors has beaten Wellington on Athletic Park. “Undoubtedly this will be a hard match for our boys, and they will take time to adapt to the conditions if the wind is blowing,” said Mr B. Moore, one of the Canterbury selectors. Ross Loffhagen has proved an inspiring leader, and Mr Moore believes he is a Canterbury senior captain in the making. Bill Gordon, the leading line-out forward, lan Mather, an enterprising wing, and the sturdy props, Mark Harding and Murray Davie, have distinguished themselves with some fine displays.
