Landslide for Sadat

NZPA Cairo The Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, won over 99 per cent of valid votes in Thursday’s national referendum on whether he should serve a second six-year term as Head of State, the Egyptian Interior Minister (Sayed Fahmi) announced yesterday. The Minister said that only 5605 “no” votes were cast, out of a total of just over 9M.

The exact percentage of valid votes in favour of Mr Sadat was 99.939 per cent, he said, which compares with the 90 per cent he received when he was first elected in 1970, after the death of President Nasser-

The 57-year-old leader had no serious rival for the Presidency, and the overwhelming endorsement in the referendum had been widely • anticipated. He will be sworn in for his new term next month.
