Masked man uses knife to snatch $800 in shop

/ A masked man wielding a knife last evening robbed a Christchurch supermarket of more than $BOO.

Staff were preparing to close the store, the Keystore supermarket at 16 Papanui Road, just before 9 p.m. when the man walked in. He brandished the long-bladed knife and demanded money. The cash register was emptied and the staff gave the man the contents — notes and cheques. It is thought that this whs about $7OO in cash and more than $lOO in cheques. The man ran from the shop, and was lost sight of. Police were at the store

within minutes, and the area was cordoned off. But in spite of an extensive search, the robber was not found. He is described as being a European, aged between 20 and 25, with shoulderlength, reddish-brown hair. He is of average build and height. He was wearing a green jersey and light blue jeans. The lower part of his face was covered. of the Bank of New Zealand when he was overpowered by the bank’s manager and a passer-by. than a fortnight. On September 2, a young man was foiled in an attempt to rob the Fendalton branch The manager of the shop told the police that he had emptied the cash register earlier in the day, and so when the robbery took place there was not as much money in it as there might have" been. No arrest had been made by late last evening. The police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a man answering the above description in the vicinity of the Bealey Avenue - Papanui Road intersection about 9 p.m,
