Big chance for dogs

By

Bob Schumacher

Maiden greyhounds will receive a grand chance to pay their way for many months, when they race for $5OO provided by the Canterbury Greyhound Breeders. Owners and Trainers’ Association at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrow afternoon.

It is easily the richest race in Christchurch for maidens. Entries were high, and 89 iongtails contested 16 heats on Monday evening. The win ners of the heats raced again on Wednesday evening, with the first four dogs in each of the semi-finals qualifying for the final.

The final tomorrow might not necessarily be won by the fastest greyhound. Fitness might play an important part, as it is doubtful if any of the dogs have undergone such an endurance test of three races in six days.

Torianna Charm will be popularly supported to win the final, which will be the second of the five jackpot races.

The Sandv Shane-Aurie’s Charm bitch was good enough to qualify for the final of the New South Wales St Leger last month. She finished a respectable fifth in the final. There is nothing in tomorrow’s feature to compare with the four dogs that finished ahead of her that time. Torianna Charm was the fastest qualifier from the 16 heats. But she was beaten by Ben Star in their semi-final after she struck trouble at the first bend. She has drawn box six in the final, a trap which has met with a lot of success at recent meetings.

Man ‘O’ War, although badly drawn in box four, might prove

the surprise packet. The Long Wave—My Handy dog has a big reputation, but he disappointed in the America’s Trophy puppy final last month.

From the inside box, All Aglow, which has looked promising in limited appearances, should stay prominent throughout. Ben Star, after winning his heat and semi-final, must he respected. as he is a fast beginner

The open 540 m has drawn a strong field. Junior Hobbs, recently named Otago’s “Greyhound of the Year” and the Southland speedster, Pigalle Girl will oppose six leading Christi church greyhounds.

But the Maxi Revs and Hobbs Gaiore are expected Io dispute the finish. From box two, Maxi Revs is ideally poised to repeat her impressive win in the Chief Zero stakes on August 7 Hobbs Galore, an outstanding winner over 750 m at the last meeting, is the class dog of the held. But the Old Hobbs—Tradv Galore bitch has drawn the out -ide box Her tendency to drift o the rear from this draw might count against her in the maximum field, although she is ceram to be the fastest finisher.

The South Island champion. Hex Havoc, is not running out his races strongly enough. Better prospects are Domingo, » gallant second to Top Club in good time at the last meeting, and Moss-Key-Toe, a determined finisher and consistent place-getter The jackpot. over five races, will be worth $2OO, Fields are:—
