Derby signs Wright
PA Gisborne A dream has come true for the Northern District cricket representative, John Wright. He has achieved the break-through into English county cricket This week he signed a contract for Derbyshire. A 22-year-old B.Sc. graduate from Christchurch, he gave up his teaching job and went to England to further his cricket career six months ago.
The Northern District selector (Mr John Guy) said Wright was expected to return to Gisborne soon and would be available for Northern District selection. Wright came to Gisborne last season after failing to get into the Canterbury team.
However, he had a good season for Northern Districts. He scored about 2000 runs, playing mostly for the Kent seconds in the English summer. His big break-through came when he batted brilliantly to score 153 and 79 in a trial for Derbyshire.
