Old Boys assured of squash double
After the latest round in the men’s and women’s inter-club squash, it is impossible for High School Old Boys to be defeated unless the teams both fail to turn up for the next round, and in the men’s case, for the next two rounds.
Although in the men’s division, Burnside A manged to close the gap slightly, the only way it can draw ahead is by gaining outright wins in the next two rounds, and Old Boys losing all four of their games.
The surprise in the men’s division was the ease with which Barry McNeil (Old Boys A) disposed of John Redpath (Old Boys B) in three games, 9-0, 10-8, 9-5, and,
in the same match, the win by Ryan McCutcheon, over the much higher ranked Viv Hargreaves.
In the Burnside-Sumner clash, all the Burnside players won relatively easily, in four games. It was pleasing to see the return to form of Neil Rush, who beat Chris Van Uden. 9-3, 5-9, 9-0, 9-5.
Had it not been for a superb comeback by Barrie Mathews in his match with Paul McFadzien, Christchurch A would have had a clear win over Christchurch C, although all the other games were hard fought. Jim Martin, well known as a tennis player, had a good win over Roger Monk, who has just returned from overseas. George Balani looked set for an easy win over Rod Blank, when he took the first two games easily, but the effects of a social soccer match on Sunday showed through in the next three games, and Blank won convincingly. The highlight of this clash, was the MathewsMcFadzien battle which went to five games and which Mathews won, 3-9, 9-7, 5-9, 9-7, 10-8. Both players played some excellent squash but both had lapses of concentration. At one stage, when McFadzien lost his third or fourth match-point, he threw his racket in the air in desperation, and had to have it returned from the adjoining court. The Old Boys women’s team is also assured of winning its grade after an
easy win over Burnside B. It is now 22 points clear of Burnside A. The Sumner - Old Boys - Suburbs match was notable for a win by Margaret Steele over iMerle Holland, in five testing games. Points are:
