Reefton problems
Sir, — Reference was made in an article last week, on the Garvey Creek Mine, to “the rusty, weather-beaten town of Reefton.” Why our town should be described in such disparaging terms is difficult to understand, especially when Reefton can no more be singled out in this way, than can certain sections of your own city. West Coast towns will always look a little different to the outsider. Reefton and other places in this region have, historically speaking, never been sure of themselves. This can be understood, where extractive industries have been the mainstay of life for so many years. We face problems, which those in the more populated areas do not even try to comprehend. However, we believe we have a fufure even though the revelation, is hesitant and slow. Meanwhile, a few kind words from our friends “over the hill” could be of immeasurable help. — Yours, etc.,
