Change of name for apartheid?

NZPA-Reuter Pretoria A South African Cabinet Minister has suggested that the term “apartheid” should be replaced as an official name for the Government's race policies. The Information Minister (Mr Connie Mulder) said “Plural democracy” would be a better term than either “apartheid” — an Afrikaans word meaning apartness — or “separate development.” Both apartheid and separate development were terms with negative connotations outside South Africa, Dr Mulder told a congress of the ruling National Party.

By contrast, plural democracy was a concept well understood abroad.

“The advantage of this term is that it does not indicate any colour or negative separation concept,” the Minister said. Adopting the new name would not mean any actual change in the race policies, but would imply “a re-appreciation of terminology,” Dr Mulder said.
