SMITH KEEPS MUM
The Rhodesian Prime Minister (Mr lan Smith) has returned to Salisbury from crucial talks on his country’s future with the South African Prime Minister (Mr John Vorster), but there was no real indication of what had transpired between the two men.
After more than four hours of talks with Mr Vorster in Pretoria, Mr Smith brushed aside reporters' questions, saying he was in a hurry to get back to Rhodesia for the opening session of the ruling Rhodesian Front annual congress in the border town of Umtali. Mr Smith, who led Rhodesia in the Unilateral Declaration of Independence from Britain in 1965, has already rejected any commitment to what is believed to be the key point in the Kissinger plan: that there should he black majority rule within two years.
Tight military security was in force in Umtah as delegates gathered in the “front line” town about 3 kilometres from the Mozambique border for the crucial congress.
Umtali has been the target for one rocketand-mortar attack from black guerrillas believed to be encamped across the border. Fears have been expressed that the presence of Mr Smith and the entire Government and party leadership may attract another attack.
