Sentence for car shoot-up
One of the two youths who had shot nine holes into an early model car parked on Waimairi beach on September 5, had been drinking that day, Mr N. L. Bradford, S.M., heard in the Christchurch Children and Young Persons Court yesterday. One of the youths, aged 16, was ordered to do 50 hours of community work and pay compensation for the damage. The second youth, aged 15, was remanded in police custody to September 22 for a psychiatric report. The Magistrate said that the offence was shocking and that if a child had been in the car the youths may well be facing charges of manslaughter rather than that of discharging a .22 rifle other than in an emergency. An order was made for the destruction of the rifle.
When asked by the Magistrate why he thought the car was abandoned, the younger youth said: "I had been drinking that dix,** ,
