‘Soft’ price freeze
PA Wellington The Labour M.P. for Christchurch Central (Mr B. G. Barclay) said in Parliament on Tuesday that there had been 700 price rises since the price freeze started three weeks ago. Mr Barclay was speaking during the debate on the Estimates of the Department of Trade and Industry. Other speakers strongly criticised the Government’s pricing policy. Mr C. J. Moyle (Lab., Mangere) said the Government was “soft” on prices; Mr C. R. Marshall (Lab., Wanganui) said that it had made only a token gesture; and Sir Basil Arthur (Lab., Timaru) flourished a bottle of rose-hip syrup which, he said, had doubled in price in three weeks.
