D.S.I.R. marks 50th birthday
A large exhibition mark-! jing the fiftieth anniversary* (of the founding of the De-! ipartment of Scientific and (Industrial Research will l (open in the King Edward [Barracks today. The exhibition features 1 graphic displays and working models, illustrating the work of the department’s 20 research divisions. These cover the geophysical, agricultural, chemical, 1 physical, and industrial re-1' search, and the Antarctic Division. ( Also included are the lON (research associations work-j ling with the department: (The Building Research Asso-' Iciation, the Meat Industry:' (Research Institute, the Coal) (Research Association, the! (Dairy Research Institute, the I: iFertiliser Manufacturers’ Re-[( (search Association, the!] Leather and Shoe Research; Association, the Pottery andf Ceramics Research Associ-I ation, the Logging Industry!; Research Association, thel* Research Institute of Laun-;[ derers, Drycleaners and; Dyers and the Wool Re-* search Organisation. The D.S.I.R. grew from <
[the Committee of Scientific (and Industrial Research, (which was set up by the (Government in 1925 under (the chairmanship of the late Dr E. (later Sir Ernest) Marsden, to advise the then Prime Minister. The committee recommended that the then secretary of the British D.S.I.R. (Sir Frank Heath) be invited to visit New Zealand to report on the organisation of [research in this country. ( Sir Frank arrived in February 1926. He presented a I report to both Houses of the [General Assembly in May. (It will be open in [Christchurch from 9.30 (a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily, exIcept Sundays, until SeptemIber 27 before going to Dunedin.
