HADEN IN LEAD
Andy Haden, the giant Auckland lock, holds the lead in a competition which is designed to discover the outstanding player in the Radio New Zealand inter-provincial rugby competitions. Rejected by the national selectors for the All Blacks* tour of South Africa, the 6ft 6Jin Haden has produced consistently outstanding rugby for Auckland in first division matches, and has 24 points in the “best player” contest. He is followed by Bevan Wilson, the 20-year-old Otago full-back (18 points), Andy Baker,
Waikato’s goal-kicking first five-eighths (16), and Stuart Wilson, the spectacular Wellington threequarter (12).
The points are awarded by Radio New Zealand rugby commentators in all first and second division matches. The “man <jf tile match” receives five points, r and two points are given to each of three other players who make significant contributions.
In Canterbury’s most recent game. against Southland, the new Canterbury flanker, Alwyn Harvey, gained five points, and two points went to Doug Heffernan (Canterbury) and the Southland tight forwards, Dave Saunders and “Boss’* McGowan.
