Men burned in blast

PA Wellington Three men were admitted to hospital after an underground explosion in a street north of Upper Hutt. They were working in a sewer pipe, which runs the length of Black Beech Road, when the explosion occurred al 9.09 a.m. Two of them were so seriously burned that the ambulance taking them to the hospital had to stop briefly at a doctor’s surgery for pain-killing injections to be administered. Three ambulances, two fire brigade engines, traffic officers and police were rushed to the scene when local residents flooded the 111 service with calls. One man is understood to have had his beard burned off in the flashback from the explosion.
