Refugees from Rhodesia

Sir, — In your editorial today you suggest the World Council of Churches and church groups in New Zealand should "contribute to the needs of Rhodesia’s refu-gees-in-the-making.” It is unfortunate that you did not trouble to contact one of the New Zealand member churches of the World Council or the National Council of Churches which, with the Roman Catholic Church, is responsible for refugee resettlement in this You would have found that, in Geneva and in New Zealand, discussions are already taking place about prospective refugees from Rhodesia. The constant policy of the churches is to respond to calls for asylum for refugees whether white or black, whether from “western” or “socialist” countries. It remains to be seen, however, whether the New Zealand Government will maintain its strict definition that entry is given only to refugees under the mandate

of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees — Yours, etc., ANGUS H. MacLEOD. General Secretary, National Council of Churches. September 15, 1976.
