Commission on women
NZPA-Reuter Geneva A United Nations Commission has opened a three-week session here to prepare a draft convention outlawing discrimination against women.
The 32-member U.N. Commission on the Status of Women is also to debate a programme for the 1976-1985 U.N. Decade for women and discuss the influence of mass media on attitudes in society. Mrs Helvi Sipila, U.N. assistant Secretary-General for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs, told the commission that 1975 International Women’s Year “became in many ways a turning point in human history.”
It had revealed the key role of women in the development of society and the future of humanity, she said, opening the session on behalf of the U.N. Secretary-General (Dr Kurt Waldheim). The commission, founded 30 years ago, meets every two years.
