Mrs Thatcher
Sir, — Graham Rhind, in his “sour grapes” reply to M. Creel’s letter on Mrs Thatcher and so-called British socialism, claims that about 2 per cent of the Soviet population—the power elite—enjoy opulent privileges. Further, that the vast majority bears the brunt of an economy that is inefficient and corrupt; a shortage of housing and shoddy clothing with quality goods procurable only by the elite (rich and powerful). Again the average worker is indifferent to his job; productivity is low and alcoholism and absenteeism are rife. Had Mr Rhind omitted the word “Soviet" I would have been convinced he was describing New Zealand society under the present regime.—Yours, etc., JAMES J. DUNCAN. September 14, 1976.
