August wet and cold
Southerly to easterly weather made August in Christchurch generally cloudy, wet, and cold, with 11 sunless days, the Meteorological Office reports. Apart from August 19 to 25. when the weather was dry and sunny, it was unsettled. One hundred and fourteen sunshine hours were recorded, 32 below the average. The lowest temperature, —3.6 deg, was recorded at the airport on August 2. The highest temperature of 18.6 deg was recorded at the Botanic Gardens on August 14. Eleven wet days were recorded. The heaviest rainfall was recorded at the Botanic Gardens on August 26 when 33mm fell.
