107 break for Meredith
PA Dunedin. Dave Meredith (Canterbury) scored the biggest break on the opening day of the New Zealand amateur billiards championships in Dunedin yesterday when he easily beat Darcv Bovce (Waikato) by 640-327, However, Meredith’s break of 107 was well short of the existing New Zealand championship record of 233, set by Alan Twohill. nine-times New Zealand billiards champion, Twohill later beat S. Moffitt (North Otago). 389-310. In other matches yesterday Herbie Robinson, three times New Zealand champion, who also holds the highest break record in amateur competitive play of 280, downed J. Mutch (South Auckland) 584-448 Lane Napper (Otago) soundly beat. L. Adams (Canterbury) by 463-330. Tim Bickerstaff (South Auckland) missed a simple drop cannon'in the last seconds of play to go under by a mere one point to 1969 national champion. Eric Simons (Canterbury), in one of the opening games. Success with that final play of the match would have given Bickerstaff a one-point win. Simons won. 484-483.
Brian Kirkness (Christchurch) beat F. Holtz, 673-251.
