Speedway title to Briton
NZPA-Reuter Chorzow Peter Collins, a 22-year-old British rider, won the individual world speedwaychampionship on the Chorzow track in Western Poland yesterday at his third attempt to capture the title.
He beat his team-mate, Malcolm Simmons, by one point to win the championship with four victories and a second place. It was a day of triumph for British riders, who took four of the top seven places. Needing only two points to secure the title, Collins foug'.it out a tight race against former world champion, Ivan Mauger, of New Zealand, in the twentieth and final race of the afternoon. Mauger, who had been tipped to win his fifth world championship, easily won his first heat yesterday, but fell out in the fifth heat with carburettor trouble. Phil Crump, of Australia, took third place in the championship after fighting Collins neck-and-neck in the heats in which they met. Mauger finished fourth in the world standings, after beating off Zenon Piech (Poland) on a count-back of wins.
