Marian Winnfield—N.A.C. and Mount Cook Airlines both serve Northland; but only N.A.C. flies to Kaitaia. Travel tax Sir, —My wife and I hope to spend our holidays in Pago Pago and Western Samoa. Will we have to pay travel tax? Yours, etc., T. F. GRANT Travel to Western Samoa via Pago Pago is not subject to the tax provided the passenger is ticketed through to Western Samoa; has accommodation arranged there; and intends spending not more than one night in American Samoa. — Travel Editor. Sir, —I want to add my protest to the debate on the tax on travel. Your correspondent, P. J. Baldwin states that his mother in Canada is going to pay the fares, presumably with Canadian currency. This will draw nothing from our overseas funds and I think the Government is being very unfair in charging the tax. Is there no right of appeal on these matters? Yours, etc.. MARLENE WRIGHTSON “The Minister of Customs has discretionary powers to waive the tax in cases of serious hardship, or where it may be contrary to public interest, or inequitable to pay the tax,” comments Mr P. Wilson, supervising examining officer of the Customs Department in Christchurch.
