“The Sweeney” in a new series
Television One beings a new series of “The Sweeney” this evening. “Sweeney” is the underworld jargon for the Flying Squad and is derived from the cockney' rhyming slang; Sweeney Todd — Flying Squad. Both police and criminals use it. Starring John Thaw as
Detective Inspector Jack Regan and Dennis Waterman as Detective Sergeant George Carter, “The Sweeney” is an hour-long drama — each episode telling a different story about the Flying Squad which is the top criminal investigation unit of the British Police Force.
These are the men ■who go for the big-time crooks and underworld masterminds. On call 24 hours a day, they dress casually and infiltrate the underworld to break crime links and networks. Their methods are often outside the rule book and unorthodox.
