Gillies given 7 years
:PA Auckland John Frederick Gillies, aged 43, who was released! on parole last February after' serving 12 years in prison! for his part in the Bassett; Road murders, has been sentenced to a further seven' years. Gillies, with Kerry Bruce Randall, aged 22, had been found guilty last month of aggravated robbery after an armed raid on a Mount Albert house. ‘ Both appeared before Mr Justice Perry yesterday for sentence. Gillies was also sentenced to 12 months imprisonment • on a charge of car con-' version. 18 months for the theft of two silver ingots.! and two years for unlawful! possession of a pistol. All] the terms are to be served: ] concurrently. ] Randall was sentenced to (three years’ imprisonment on charges of aggravated [robbery and car conversion. I The judge said Gillies had entered the home, confronted two young men unknown to him. menaced them, demanded money, and with a I pistol forced them to lie! down on a bedroom floor. "This was obviously a terrifying experience for them ■ and quite unwarranted,” said) the judge. “The record showed that Gillies was aj Iman of violence and had( been released to see if he I could fit into the community. Obviously, you cannot.”
