Roll-on ship taking over
The arrival of the rollon ship Union Melbourne in Lyttelton this morning mav be the beginning of the end for the Rangatira. The Union Melbourne will replace the Hawea on the Tasman run. The Hawea was bought bv the Government in June for $2.75M from the Union Steam Ship Company to provide a freight-only service between Wellington and Lyttelton, to replace the Rangatira’s service. Before taking over the Hawea’s run between the South Island, Wellington and Melbourne, the Union Melbourne sailed fortnightly between Auckland, Tauranga and Sydney. At 5599 tons deadweight, the Union Melbourne can carry more than twice the cargo of the 2652-ton Hawea. Union Company officials sav this should be of great benefit to South Island exporters and importer*.
