Abortion
Sir, —Caroline Cameron Daniels equates “personality defects” with gross abnormalities such as mongolism and spina bifida. She implies that if we permit grossly deformed foetuses to be aborted, then eventually we will kill people because of “personality defects.” This is typical of the arguments of antiabortionists. Why don’t they oppose fishing on the grounds that tolerance of fishing will eventually lead to the killing of human swimmers? On the other hand, if those who oppose any form of population control have their way, then democracy and human rights will not survive in the grossly overcrowded world which will result. Totalitarian governments will come to power everywhere and then people will be killed, not just for “personality defects” but for possessing higher than average human qualities. That will come to pass, not because of pro-abortionists, but because of the over-simplified moral bigotry of many antiabortionists.—Yours, etc.. MARK D. SADLER. August 22, 1976.
