Rubber workers demand talks
Rubber workers in Canterbury have given their employers two weeks to meet them to discuss their award claims. This was decided at the quarterly meeting of members of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union on Sunday. In a letter to the employers, the union said that if the employers did not meet the union the present award claims would be withdrawn, and replaced by new claims.
The first round of talks broke down on July 12 over
the union’s claims for an award increase of 21 per cent. The employers refused to accept that the claim I came under the meaning of “exceptional circumstances” and should be taken to the Industrial Commission.
The union’s secretary (Mr L. Morel) said yesterday that any new set of claims lodged by the union was likely to be more severe than the first. The rubber workers are continuing their four-day, 32-hour working week as a I protest measure.
