Harris new All Black

Never a national trialist but now an All Black — that is the Cinderella story of Perry Harris, the chunky loose-head prop who has been chosen to replace the injured Brad Johnstone in the New Zealand rugby team in South Africa.

The 30-year-old Harris 'is a key member of the Manawatu side which is currently leading the national first division competition and which, on Saturday, captured the Ranfurly Shield from Auckland at Eden Park. In South Africa he will link up with his fellow provincial front row forward, Kent Lambert. Harris has a longer association with Manawatu than Lambert; he was first chosen for the side in 1970 and since then has appeared in 82 out of a possible 88 matches. Last season he was chosen as Manawatu’s “Player of the Year.” He is the first member of the Te Kawau club to win national honours. Harris won selection ahead of the more favoured candidates, Paul Sapsford (Otago) — the only main trialist prop this season not chosen for the tour — and John Ashworth (Canterbury), a loose-head specialist and a national trialist this year and last.
