Official report and prices

Prices for all crossbred wools were dearer at the opening Timaru wool sale of the season, according to the official report issued by the New Zealand Wool Bus ers’ Association, New Zealand Wool Brokers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Marketing Corporation. The sale was held in Christchurch yesterday. Compared with the Invercargill crossbred sale on Thursday, crossbred fleece was in sellers’ favour; crossbred skirtings and crdssbred second-shear 2| per ceflt dearer; crossbred oddments up to 21 per cent dearer; good length crossbred crutchings in sellers’ favour and short length 21 to 5 per cent dearer. oalfbred fleece and skirtings unchanged on last week’s Dunedin sale. The official report said that competition was keen and wide-

{spread, with the main interest being from the Continent and Eastern Europe, with support from Australian and New Zealand carpet mills. The offering comprised 11,083 bales drawn from South Canterbury, Mid-Canterbury and North Otago. It included 31.92 per cent of crossbred fleece, 13.16 per cent of fine fleece, 19.59 per cent of crutchings, 24.2 per cent , of oddments and 11.13 per cent of miscellaneous wool. The wool reflected the dry autumn and winter conditions and made up one of the best displays of wool for an August Timaru sale for some years. The earlier pre-lamb shorn crossbred clips were very high yielding, of fair to good colour, hut lacking a little in lustre and length Clips from some of the drier districts were dull and almost greyish in colour, but ex-

ceptionally dry. There was some evidence of hay feeding.

The oddments were drier and high yielding and possibly a little shorter in length. Crutchings were of only reasonable length, a little mixed and shorter, but again drier and higher yielding than normally at this sale.

Bellies were amongst the best offered in August for many seasons, being free of mud and in light condition. There was only a limited offering of Merino and halfbred clips, but they included some good style well-grown lines.
