No-one sought after fire

No other persons were involved in a house fire at South New Brighton yesterday in which a woman was badly burnt. This was confirmed last evening by the officer in charge of the investigation (Detective Inspector N. J. Stokes). However, he added that police inquiries into the fire would continue today. The woman, Mrs Joyce

Kathleen Park, aged 38, was rescued by firemen from the blazing house at 336 Estuary Road. She suffered extensive bums, and was in a serious condition in Burwood Hospital late last evening. A large-scale police inquiry began after the fire, which badly damaged the three-bedroom brick house. Fire safety officers and a squad of 12 detectives

spent yesterday sifting through the wreckage, and several samples were sent to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for analysis. Detective Inspector Stokes said that the results of the tests would not be known for a few days. He declined to say what the samples were. The first call to the fire w'as received at 6.23 a.m.

Four engines attended, and firemen using breathing apparatus immediately began a search of the smokefilled house. They found Mrs Park in a bedroom, and dragged her to safety. The injured woman was attended at the scene by a doctor before being rushed to Burwood Hospital by a St John ambulance. Mrs Park was the only occupant of the house.
