I PA Auckland The owner of the fishing boat, Celtic, which is now subject to a salvage claim of $3358, has decided not to pay up until he has examined all the legal questions involved. The Marine Surveyor, and president of the Auckland Coast Guard (Captain C. B. Thompson) has offered his services free of charge to Mr J. Catton, the owner of the 30ft fishing boat. Mr Catton said that he was consulting a solicitor, and with Captain Thompson’s assistance they would examine the chances of fighting the Royal New Zealand Navy salvage claim. Captain Thompson said that the law regarding salvage was not very clear and there were few people in [New Zealand who understood ; it properly. He said Mr Catton ap- ; peared to have some grounds [for challenging the salvage [claim. After it was abandoned, the Celtic was totved into port by two warships, In verell and Taupo.
