Flare alert at Sumner
A red and white flare seen off the coast at Sumner on Saturday night was probably fired by a Russian or Japanese mother ship to recall her fishing dories, according to the skipper of the Sumner lifeboat (Mr E. G. Archbold). The flare was seen by two boys on Scarborough Head about 7.15 p.m. Mr Archbold said that it was estimated to have been fired about 14 miles north-east of Sumner. The lifeboat crew was placed on alert while inquiries w'ere made to the police and the Civil Aviation Division. Mr Archbold said that it had later been established that a Friendship aircraft, on a test flight in the area where the flare had been seen, had noticed an unidentified fishing fleet. There were no reports of any aircraft or vessels being in difficulty, and the lifeboat was not sent out.
