A warning to drinkers
PA Wellington The road toll to the end of July was 371 — 17 less than the similar period last year. The July toll was 49 — three more than July, 1975. Announcing these figures, the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) said that last month was characterised by the high proportion of people killed at week-ends. These totalled 32 — making up 65 per cent of the total — compared with 17, or 37 per cent, in July last year.
“Almost half of this July’s toll were killed on Saturday nights, and the indications are that alcohol or fatigue are often involved,” Mr McLachlan said.
Mr McLachlan said that there had been a continuation of the increase in single vehicle accidents during July. There were
24. compared with 17 last year. “So far, there have been 61 fatal accidents where vehicles have run off the road, compared with 27 during the period of the previous year. “Once again, this often indicates the effect of alcohol: and until the problem of drinking and driving can be overcome, it seems this tragic record will continue,” Mr McLachlan said.
