League club on gaming charge
A charge against the Papanui Rugby League Football Club of using their premises in Sawyers Arms Road as a gaming house last month was adjourned by arrangement to September 17 by Mr F. G. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr M. Gibson appeared for the football club.
Seven poker machines were found on the premises in a police raid on July 12. The machines, which operated on the insertion of a 10c coin, were believed to have been bought from Australia.
It is believed the police found the machines in cupboards on the premises. Poker machines are illegal in New Zealand and anyone found using them is liable to a maximum sentence of three months imprisonment and a $2OO fine.
